For jewelry designer Alexis Bittar, inspiration can come from almost anywhere: vacations in Africa or Europe, the cacophony of New York City (where he was born, raised, and is still based) — or just from turning on the TV. That explains his newest collection, inspired by the HBO film Grey Gardens, based on Jacqueline Onassis’ eccentric aunt and cousin, Big and Little Edie Beale. “I related to the chaos of the movie,” says Bittar. “The collection’s got a bit of Jackson Pollack going on, with a classic floral 1940’s feel, and a bit of punk,” he adds. “Everything that I design is a medley, with layers of stories.”
In this case, that medley revolves around Bittar’s trademark hand-painted Lucite, tweaked for the collection with encrusted crystals, Crayola bright scarabs, and oversized vintage-inspired flowers. The pieces seem more like collectibles than mere jewelry, but they are easy to wear and look great with even something as simple as jeans and a white T-shirt.
