As Senior Fashion Director of Saks Fifth Avenue, Colleen Sherin is truly in-the-know. Here, she lets us in on some of her personal favorite investments, designers and what she just can’t wait to splurge on this summer.

I knew I wanted to work in fashion when…
Even as a three-year-old I loved playing with all the clothes in my dressing up box. It’s always been my passion.

I’ve learned the most by working with…
Terron Schaefer, our Executive Vice President of Creative Marketing and Chief Creative Officer. He is an incredible person to work for. I call him the Renaissance Man. He inspires and encourages me every day. His extensive knowledge, creativity, passion and energy make it a joy to be in his presence and to be part of his team. Nicole Fischelis was the real deal, having grown up in the fashion business in Paris. She was a wonderful supporter of young designer talent. Jaqui Lividini challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to try things I may have otherwise been afraid of doing.

The best thing about my job is…
The people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve developed over the years are by far the best things about my job.

My biggest challenge is…
Not enough time.

I’m exposed to so many clothes everyday, but I absolutely cannot live without my…
Stella McCartney tuxedo jacket. It is perfectly tailored and can be worn so many different ways — it can dress up a pair of jeans or add a touch of a masculine edge to a feminine dress.

The best investment piece I have is…
My Chanel duffle coat. It is a timeless classic and the perfect travel coat. It makes me feel pulled together rain, snow or shine.

This summer, I will splurge on…
A customized Louis Vuitton trunk for my apartment. I’ll have it forever.

A true highlight in my career so far was when…
I was fortunate enough to meet Lee [Alexander] McQueen early in both of our careers and was a loyal fan throughout the years. He was a true genius. He challenged the status quo and changed the landscape of fashion. Sarah Burton is carrying on brilliantly at Alexander McQueen.

Some other favorites of mine are…
Marc Jacobs. I have great respect for him and Robert Duffy. They made quite an impression on me as a young assistant buyer — never wavering from their vision, even when times were tough. They’ve done a stellar job of building the brands of Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.

The best fashion tip I’ve ever received was…
Be yourself and wear what makes you happy. Also, it’s about quality, not quantity.
