Simon Spurr has come a long way from when he started his brand in 2006 with just three styles of selvedge jeans. Now he boasts two collections, Spurr and Simon Spurr. Spurr is more contemporary in feel, while his eponymous collection adds that more polished edge. Prior to starting his namesake line Spurr made his name at the haute houses of Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent under Hedi Slimane. Spurr’s British heritage continues to influence designs as evidenced in a strong understanding of fit and tailoring. His meticulous work has not gone unnoticed. Spurr has been nominated for GQ’s Best New Menswear Designer in America, the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund and the CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year.

SAKSPOV: What is the best style advice you have been given?

Simon Spurr: Aspire to great style and not fleeting fashion trends. Always stay true to your own DNA.

SAKSPOV: Sartorial pet peeve (one thing that most guys don’t get right)?

S.S.: I’d have to say that guys tend to buy the wrong fit. Many seem always buy one size too large. Buying a garment that fits as close to your body is important and can slim your physique tremendously. I understand music culture and sometimes the need for oversize, this happens in fashion also, but when buying more tailored styles, it’s imperative to buy the correct size.

SAKSPOV: What is your favorite item in your closest?

S.S.: My Simon Spurr sunglasses. I just started driving again and they are the perfect gradient tint to wear during bright daylight all the way to low-level dusk light.

SAKSPOV: If you could dress anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

S.S.: Ryan Gosling. In additional to being a talented actor, I think Ryan has natural style that mirrors the Simon Spurr brand.

SAKSPOV: What is one thing every man must own?

S.S.: A great peacoat. You can never under estimate the need for the perfect peacoat. I wear mine constantly throughout the cold months.

SAKSPOV: If you weren’t a fashion designer, what would you be?

S.S.: A furniture designer. I’ve always been influenced by furniture and it’s definitely on my to-do list in life.

SAKSPOV: If there were a movie made about your life, which actor would portray you?

S.S.: Ryan Gosling

SAKSPOV: What’s on your playlist?

S.S.:

Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits

40 ft, Franz Ferdinand

Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes

Simple Twist of Fate, Bob Dylan

Ruby Tuesday, Rolling Stones

SAKSPOV: The holidays are around the corner. Do you have any travel plans?

S.S.: Maybe a quick trip to Mexico with my wife to catch up with her. We are like passing ships in the night. [She’s a doctor.] And a snowboarding trip to Colorado with the boys in February after fashion week.
