Erin Fetherston Tells All

Designer Erin Fetherston talks to SaksPOV about design, style and the best advice she ever got

Feminine, whimsical, romantic and versatile. We just can’t get enough of Erin Fetherston’s Erin collection for spring. Whether we’re heading to an office meeting or a fun night out, there is literally something for every occasion. Here, the San Francisco native tells us a bit about herself, her designs and why designing became her life’s calling.

I knew I wanted to be a designer when…

I was a little girl and had a very strong opinion about what I wanted to wear. I used to love playing dress up and understood early on that clothes have the power to unlock the imagination.

I love designing clothes because…

We have such a personal and intimate relationship with our clothing. As a designer, I am always trying to design with the consciousness of injecting positive energy into my designs. I want the woman who ends up wearing an ERIN garment to feel the piece was made for her.

The greatest advice I’ve ever received was…

Stay true to my vision.

My best advice to a new designer would be…

Know your customer.

I started my contemporary line, Erin, because…

I really love designing a collection that has creative integrity and is ultimately accessible. The Erin collection allows me to do both. I got to a place with my designer line where I felt like the price point was taking the fun out of shopping and that’s what I’m all about — the joy of getting dressed.

My spring collection was inspired by…

A photograph of Mia Farrow at Truman Capote’s 1966 Black and White Ball. I explored a lot of clean modern silhouettes and the butterfly became a key motif in our print story. Along with my signature color palette of ivory, black and blush, I embraced bright pop colors creating a collection of easy-to-wear pieces that are fresh and playfully chic.

My favorite piece in the collection is…

The 3/4-Sleeve Pleated Dress because it’s such a versatile piece and a signature Erin style. It’s a dress I wear year-round. What I love is that the silhouette flatters every figure and works for any occasion. It can be easily dressed up for evening or worn casually for day. It’s also a great style to buy now and wear forward.

I like to wear it…

During the colder months with a cropped pullover sweater, tights and boots. As it gets warmer, I like to pair it with great flats or a wedge sandal.
