Calvin Klein’s main man Francisco Costa stopped by our New York store on Thursday to host a fashion show for the brand’s Resort 2013 collection. The women’s creative director for Calvin Klein Collection, showed a colorful lineup with cut-out double-face shifts, sheer T-shirt dresses and sleeveless tunics in shades of chartreuse, moss and cobalt, inspired by the sensual vibe of Seventies California.
Francisco shared his inspiration with SaksPOV:
SaksPOV: What inspired this new collection?
Francisco Costa: There’s this iconic image of Lisa Taylor by Helmut Newton from 1970’s, where the model is gorgeous, very casual, so all of the prints and the styling came from this picture. During the height of the ‘70’s, women were really sexy, and that’s how I started it.

SaksPOV: How do the fabrics you used reflect back to the Seventies?
F.C.: We started by finding textures that reflected that time period. The collection needed to be urban and dark and textural, so it has an urban spirit to it with very cool, great shapes and amazing textures. Since I was on this California thing and saw the “Under the Big Black Sun”, an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art there, it all felt very natural.
SaksPOV: We’re curious. What is inspiring you for next season?
F.C.: Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers…. The streets of New York are fantastic for inspiration, or every trip I take, or book I read. Some things just show up and they stay with you.
